Must-Know IELTS Myths
Straight to the point:
1 Small Changes, Big Impact: How IELTS Scoring Works
Did you know that just one extra correct answer in IELTS Reading can change your life? It could be the difference between getting into your dream college or missing out.
To get an overall 6.5 Band, your four sub-scores must add up to 25 points.
Both of these equal an overall 6.5:
- Option A: Listening 6.5 + Speaking 6.5 + Reading 6.0 + Writing 6.0
- Option B: Listening 7.0 + Speaking 7.0 + Reading 5.5 + Writing 5.5
Imagine this: you live in an English-speaking country, so Listening & Speaking are strong. But Reading & Writing are weaker.
Total 24.5 → Rounded down to 6.0
Total 25.0 → Rounded up to 6.5

2 Work Smarter, Not Harder: The 80/20 Rule for IELTS
Only 100 hours left? Spend them where they matter most.
-
Listening & Speaking (Max 20 hrs)
- Speaking: ~5 hrs — master format & question styles
- Listening: ~5 hrs — learn trap types & drills
-
Reading (40–50 hrs)
Focus on tactics, not vocabulary lists. Secure those 20 correct answers efficiently. -
Writing (Remaining time)
Task 2 = 66.6%, Task 1 = 33.3%. Use formulas, aim for 5.0–5.5 with less stress.
3 Don’t Waste Money or Time: Pass IELTS in One Go!
Retaking IELTS repeatedly drains money and confidence. Prepare properly over 2–3 months and pass the first time.
What if you get stuck?
Speaking & Writing can be subjective. Use EOR (Enquiry on Results) if needed. Retaking without improving just leaves your score to luck.
Key to Success: Review & Fix Mistakes
Analyse every error. Understand why it happened. Fix it. That’s how you say Bye-bye to IELTS for good.
Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking:
Core Tips for Each Skill
Learning a second language is very different from picking up your native tongue. IELTS prep is about practical strategies, not long-term cultural immersion. (Want deeper language learning? See the “Immersion” section.)
1 Reading: Use the Test to Build Your Vocabulary
IELTS texts and Listening Part 4 scripts are packed with high-quality ideas you can reuse in Speaking and Writing.
Cambridge IELTS 20 Examples:
- Invasion of the Robot Umpire (p.46) → AI topics
- The Chembe Bird Sanctuary (Test 4, Listening Part 4) → Environment topics
💡 Listening Part 1 & 3 transcripts are also goldmines for natural, fluent expressions.
How to Tackle Reading Questions:
- Don’t read line-by-line: Never read the whole passage before checking the questions.
- Target the answers: Question → Text, not Text → Question.
- Manage your time: Skip deep reading unless you’re already an advanced reader.
2 Writing: Work Smart with Outlines
Writing is often the biggest obstacle—but manageable with clear rules.
- Stay on topic: Never drift. Always meet the word count.
- Save time with outlines: With only weeks left, practice essay outlines instead of full essays.
- Don’t ignore Task 1: It’s worth 33.3% of your score. Maps and process diagrams often block Band 7.
3 Speaking: Focus on Fluency First
Modern AI makes Speaking practice easier than ever.
- Prioritize fluency: For Band 6.0, being easy to understand beats perfect grammar.
- Use AI wisely: Good prompts unlock feedback on vocabulary and logic.
4 Listening: Stop Losing Easy Points
High-level listening takes time. Easy marks come from avoiding careless spelling mistakes.
Master Basic Spelling:
- Days (Monday–Sunday)
- Months (January–December)
- Places (museum, library)
- Names (Peter Smith)
(See Must-Know IELTS Myths for the math.)
As an educator, I know this feels shortcut-focused. But on a tight deadline, these strategies deliver fast results.

Hints for IELTS Reading
A) Reading ABC – Weaknesses and Techniques
- Lack of background knowledge → slower comprehension
- Low exposure to topic-specific vocabulary → difficulty understanding arguments, processes, and cause–effect logic
“Give me a 150 word summary about basic psychology concepts. I am weak in this topic and want to build background knowledge. Please write it at the level of an IELTS Reading Passage 2. Give me translation in Chinese/ Vietnamese/ Indonesian/ Arabian/ German/ …”
Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes. One core idea is cognition, which refers to how people think, remember, and make decisions. Researchers believe that individuals often rely on mental shortcuts, known as heuristics, which help them make quick judgments but can also lead to predictable errors. Another important concept is conditioning, the process through which behaviour is learned. Classical conditioning links two events together, while operant conditioning strengthens behaviour through rewards or reduces it through punishment.
Psychologists also study motivation, which explains why people choose certain actions. Motivation can come from internal desires, such as curiosity, or external factors like praise. In addition, the concept of personality helps explain why individuals behave differently in similar situations. Many theories suggest that personality is shaped by both genetic influences and life experiences. Together, these concepts help psychologists understand how people learn, think, and interact with the world.
B) Focusing on Question Types
Each week, focus on ONE question type in your weak topics:- Week 1: T/F/NG
- Week 2: Matching headings or information
- Week 3: Summary completion
- Week 4: Multiple choice
C) Say no to silly mistakes
Do NOT make silliest mistakes in the IELTS computer-based test (CBT) — especially the ones that look small but cause disastrous score loss.- Arriving with injured fingers or arms — Playing ball games the day before and hurting your hand is unbelievably silly; slow typing = lost minutes = lost answers.
- Not practising on a computer — Students only use paper books, then panic when scrolling, highlighting, and switching screens.
- Skipping warm-up reading before entering the test centre — Cold brain = slow start = panic.
- Not checking the question window vs passage window — Mixing up which window you’re reading leads to wrong answers.
- Not skipping difficult questions — Getting stuck kills your timing for Passage 3.
- Copying from the wrong line after scrolling — Very common in CBT because the text moves.
Consistency beats intensity. Apply A → B → C to your Reading prep, and your score will reflect your effort.

7 Some people think the newly built houses should be as same as the old house style in local areas. Others argue that local authorities should allow people to build houses in their own style. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

CReminders
BEFORE the Listening Test — Silly Mistakes with Serious Consequences
- Arriving with injured fingers or arms — Playing ball games the day before and hurting your hand is unbelievably silly; pain distracts you and ruins concentration.
- Coming in with a bad mood — Emotional instability = missed keywords, panic, and slow recovery after one mistake.
- Not checking headphone volume — Starting the test with volume too low or too high destroys Part 1 accuracy.
- Not learning common distractors — “I’ll take the 7:30… no, actually the 8:00” — students choose the wrong one.
- Not warming up ears before entering the test room — Cold ears = slow reaction in Part 1.
- Not checking the test room environment — Not adjusting chair height, headphone position, or seating comfort leads to distraction.
DURING the Listening Test — Silly Mistakes That Kill Scores
- Losing focus after missing one answer — Students panic and miss the next 3–5 answers.
- Not reading questions in advance — You must know what to listen for before the audio starts.
- Misreading word limit instructions — “ONE WORD ONLY” → writing two words = automatic zero.
- Falling for distractors — The speaker changes their mind; students choose the first number they hear.
- Not noticing signpost words — “However”, “But”, “Actually”, “In fact” → these flip the answer.
- Writing answers in the wrong box — One shift error ruins the entire section.
AFTER the Listening Test — Silly Mistakes That Should Never Happen
- Not reviewing answers during the final checking time — You get time to check spelling and grammar; wasting it is foolish.
- Not correcting obvious spelling errors — “enviroment” instead of “environment” — painful, avoidable loss.
- Not calming down before the next section — Stress from Listening affects Reading performance.
